Reconditioned Range Rover Engines UK: Fully Tested, Supplied and Fitted

Reconditioned Range Rover Engines UK: Fully Tested, Supplied and Fitted

24 September 2026 • By Vic

A failed engine doesn't mean the end of your Range Rover. This guide breaks down what reconditioned Range Rover engines really are, how they differ from used, rebuilt, and remanufactured units, and how RR Engine Works strips, rebuilds, and tests every engine at its Grays, Essex workshop. It covers matching the correct engine by model and engine code, realistic pricing, and exactly what's included with supply-and-fit, plus the servicing habits that keep a rebuilt engine running for years.

Your Range Rover has stopped running and the news isn't good. Maybe the crankshaft has gone, or the timing chain has jumped, or the engine seized on the motorway. Then the main dealer quote arrives, and a new engine costs more than the car is worth.

That's usually the moment owners start looking for reconditioned Range Rover engines. It's a sensible move. A properly reconditioned engine gets your Range Rover back on the road for a fraction of the cost of a new unit, and when it's rebuilt and tested correctly, it can run as well as the original did.

At RR Engine Works, we supply and fit reconditioned engines for the full Range Rover line-up, including the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Evoque, Velar, and Vogue. Every engine is stripped, rebuilt, and tested at our workshop in Grays, Essex, and we deliver and fit across the UK.

This guide explains what a reconditioned engine actually is, how to find the right one for your model, how we rebuild and test them, and what you should expect to pay.

What Are Reconditioned Range Rover Engines and Are They Worth Buying?

A reconditioned Range Rover engine is a used engine that has been fully stripped, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt with new wear parts, then tested before it goes back into a vehicle. Worn components such as bearings, piston rings, gaskets, seals, and timing parts are replaced, and key surfaces are measured against manufacturer tolerances.

For most owners, the answer to "is it worth it?" comes down to three things:

  • Cost. A reconditioned engine typically costs a fraction of a new Jaguar Land Rover unit, which can make the difference between repairing the car and scrapping it.
  • Value of the vehicle. On a Range Rover Sport L494 or Range Rover L405 worth well into five figures, replacing the engine protects a significant asset.
  • Lifespan. A properly rebuilt engine starts with fresh wear components, so it isn't carrying the hidden mileage and wear of an untested used engine.

Put simply, if the rest of the vehicle is in good condition, a reconditioned engine is usually the most cost-effective way to keep it. Where the bodywork, gearbox, or suspension also has serious problems, we'll tell you honestly if the numbers don't add up.

Reconditioned vs Rebuilt vs Used Range Rover Engines: What's the Difference?

These terms get used loosely across the industry, and that causes real confusion. Two suppliers can both advertise a "rebuilt engine" and mean completely different things. Here's how the options usually compare:

Used engine

Rebuilt engine

Reconditioned engine

Remanufactured engine

Typical priceLowestLow to midMidHighest

The key takeaway: a used engine is a gamble, because you're buying someone else's unknown wear. A reconditioned engine removes most of that risk by replacing the parts that fail.

When we say reconditioned at RR Engine Works, we mean every engine is fully stripped, measured, rebuilt with new wear parts, and tested before dispatch. We don't use the word for a cleaned-up used engine.

How Long Does a Reconditioned Range Rover Engine Last?

A well-rebuilt engine that is fitted correctly and serviced on schedule can last many years and tens of thousands of miles, often comparable to the original engine's service life. The rebuild quality matters, but so does what happens after fitting.

In our experience, the engines that last longest have owners who follow a few simple habits:

  • Keep the first service. Change the oil and filter at the interval we recommend after fitting, usually around, miles, to clear any fine running-in debris.
  • Use the correct oil specification. Ingenium and TDV6 engines in particular are sensitive to oil grade. Using the wrong spec speeds up timing chain and bearing wear.
  • Don't ignore warning lights. Overheating, low oil pressure, or DPF warnings caught early are cheap to fix. Ignored, they can damage the new engine.
  • Fix the original cause. If your old engine failed because of a blocked oil pickup, a failed water pump, or a faulty turbo, that problem must be resolved, or it can happen again.

That last point is where many cheap engine swaps go wrong, and it's why we always look at why the original engine failed.

Which Reconditioned Range Rover Engine Do I Need for My Model?

"Range Rover" covers a lot of engines. A 2012 Range Rover Vogue could have a 4.4 TDV8 diesel or a 5.0 V8 petrol, and a 2020 Evoque could use one of several 2.0 Ingenium variants with different power outputs. Two cars that look identical can need completely different engines.

That's why the correct engine is identified by model, generation, fuel type, engine capacity, and engine code, not just the name on the tailgate. The easiest route is a registration check, which pulls your vehicle's exact specification and removes the guesswork.

Range Rover, Sport, Evoque and Velar Engines by Generation

The table below covers the main models and engines we supply. It's a guide, as specific engine fitment depends on year and market, so we always confirm against your registration or VIN before supplying.

Range Rover VelarL5602017–present2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol, 3.0 V6 diesel and petrol, 5.0 Supercharged V8

The Range Rover Vogue isn't a separate generation. It's a trim level on the full-size Range Rover, so a "Vogue engine" is the same unit fitted to the L322, L405, or L460 of that year.

How Do I Find My Range Rover Engine Code?

The engine code is the most reliable way to match a replacement engine to your vehicle. You can find it in three ways:

  1. Registration check. Enter your reg on our quote form and we'll identify the engine from the vehicle's build data. This is the quickest option.
  2. V5C and VIN. Your logbook lists engine capacity and fuel type, and the VIN lets us decode the exact specification.
  3. The engine itself. The code is stamped on the cylinder block. Its location varies by engine, and on some Range Rovers it's hard to see without removing covers.

If you're unsure, send us your registration and we'll confirm the correct engine before you commit to anything.

How Do We Recondition and Test Every Range Rover Engine?

This is where reconditioned engines differ most between suppliers, and it's the part most websites skip over. A reconditioned engine is only as good as the process behind it.

Every engine at our Grays workshop goes through the same stages: strip-down, clean, inspect and measure, machine where needed, rebuild with new parts, and test. Each engine is built, with of hands-on experience working on Land Rover and Jaguar engines.

What Parts Are Replaced During Range Rover Engine Reconditioning?

Once the engine is stripped, every major component is cleaned and measured. Anything outside tolerance is machined or replaced. As standard, a reconditioned engine from us includes:

  • Crankshaft and bearings. The crankshaft is inspected and measured, then ground if needed. New main and big-end bearings are fitted. This matters on the 2.7 and 3.0 TDV6, where crankshaft and bearing failure is one of the most common reasons these engines come to us.
  • Pistons and piston rings. Pistons are inspected for scoring and cracks, with new rings fitted to restore compression and control oil consumption.
  • Cylinder head. The head is pressure tested for cracks, checked for flatness, and skimmed if necessary. Valves and seats are inspected, and hydraulic lifters are checked.
  • Camshafts. Lobes and journals are measured for wear.
  • Timing components. A new timing chain or belt kit is fitted, including guides and tensioners. On the 2.0 Ingenium and 5.0 V8, worn timing components are a well-known weak point, so we never reuse them.
  • Gaskets and seals. A full new gasket and seal set, including head gasket and crankshaft oil seals, to prevent oil leaks and coolant loss.
  • Oil system. The oil pump is checked, oil galleries cleaned, and the oil pickup inspected, since a blocked pickup causes oil starvation and bottom-end failure.

Parts are [OEM / OEM-equivalent / genuine JLR, confirm], and we're happy to tell you exactly what went into your engine.

What Tests Does an Engine Pass Before It Leaves Our Grays Workshop?

A rebuilt engine that hasn't been tested is still a guess. Before any engine is dispatched or fitted, it goes through a series of checks:

  • Compression testing. Confirms every cylinder is sealing evenly, which shows the rings, valves, and head gasket are doing their job.
  • Cylinder head pressure testing. Detects hairline cracks that can cause coolant loss or overheating later.
  • Cooling system and leak testing. Checks for internal and external leaks before the engine ever runs in a vehicle.
  • Oil pressure checks. Confirms the lubrication system is delivering correct pressure to bearings and the turbo.
  • Fuel system checks. On diesel engines, injectors and associated components are checked for correct operation.
  • Final inspection and diagnostic scan. After fitting, the engine is run, scanned with diagnostic equipment, and road tested before the vehicle is returned.

How Much Does a Reconditioned Range Rover Engine Cost in the UK?

The price of a reconditioned Range Rover engine depends mainly on the engine type. A 2.0 Ingenium for an Evoque is a very different job from a 4.4 SDV8 in a Range Rover L405. Here's a guide to our starting prices:

Several factors can move the final price up or down:

  • Engine and model. V8 engines take more labour to remove and refit than four-cylinder units.
  • Ancillaries. If your turbocharger, injectors, or water pump were damaged in the original failure, they may need replacing too.
  • Whether you supply a core engine. An exchange engine, where we take your old unit back, can reduce the cost.
  • Vehicle condition. Seized bolts or previous poor repairs can add labour time.

For comparison, a new engine from a main dealer can cost [£X–£X] or more for some models before labour. That's why reconditioning makes sense for so many owners.

Here's a typical scenario: a Range Rover Sport L494 3.0 SDV6 comes in with a knocking engine at around 110,000 miles, and diagnosis shows bearing failure. A new engine would make the repair uneconomical, while a reconditioned 306DT supplied and fitted costs [£X], keeping a car worth [£X] on the road with a warranty. Frequently Asked Questions About Reconditioned Range Rover Engines

Are reconditioned Range Rover engines reliable?
Yes, when they're rebuilt properly with new wear parts and tested before fitting. Reliability depends on the rebuild quality, correct fitting, and following the recommended servicing. Fixing the original cause of failure is just as important.

How much is a reconditioned Range Rover engine?
Prices are vary for smaller engines such as the 2.0 Ingenium and rise for V6 and V8 units. Supply and fit costs more than supply only. A registration check gives you an exact fixed price.

How quickly can a replacement Range Rover engine be supplied and fitted?
If the engine is in stock, fitting typically takes working days. Engines that need to be built to order take around, days. We'll give you a realistic timescale with your quote.

Should I rebuild my own engine or replace it with a reconditioned one?
Rebuilding your own engine can work if the damage is limited and the block and crankshaft are recoverable. After a major failure, such as a seized engine, a reconditioned exchange engine is usually faster and often cheaper because your car isn't off the road while the rebuild happens.

What causes Range Rover engine failure?
Common causes include crankshaft and bearing failure on TDV6 engines, timing chain wear on 2.0 Ingenium and 5.0 V8 engines, turbo failure, overheating, and oil starvation. Missed services and low oil levels make most of these more likely.

Can you collect my Range Rover if it isn't driveable?
Yes. We can arrange vehicle recovery to our Grays workshop from [coverage area]. Ask for a collection price when you request your quote.

Do you supply engines outside Essex and London?
Yes. We deliver reconditioned engines nationwide across the UK for supply-only orders, and we can advise on fitting options in your area.
