The Engines Behind Britain's Favourite Compact Range Rover
The first-generation Evoque (2011–2018) launched with the 2.2-litre diesel shared with the Freelander 2 and a punchy Si4 turbocharged petrol. From 2015, Land Rover's own Ingenium diesel took over, and the second-generation car (2019 onwards) moved entirely to Ingenium power — diesel D150 to D200, petrol P200 to P300, plus the P300e plug-in hybrid.
Each family has a signature weakness. The Si4 petrol is known for timing chain stretch and heavy oil consumption. Early Ingenium diesels inherit the familiar chain rattle and DPF-driven oil dilution, while the 204PT Ingenium petrols can suffer chain wear when oil changes are stretched. Left unchecked, any of these ends in major internal damage.
The good news: caught early, most Evoque engine faults are repairable at sensible cost, and even complete failures rarely justify dealer replacement pricing. A metallic rattle in the first seconds after start-up is the Evoque's most recognisable warning sign. It means the timing chain has stretched or its hydraulic tensioner can no longer hold pressure, allowing the chain to slap against its guides until oil pressure builds. Every cold start grinds away a little more material.
Ignore it and the ending is predictable: the chain jumps or snaps, pistons meet valves, and a £1,500 repair becomes a full rebuild. Extended oil-change intervals and dilution from DPF regeneration accelerate the wear, which is why we check chain stretch electronically during every diagnostic visit — at no charge.
