A brand-new OEM PT204 from a dealership typically runs £8,000–£14,000 before fitting. A quality reconditioned unit generally sits between £3,500 and £5,500 as a bare engine, while rebuilding your original usually lands between the two. INGENIUM ENGINE SUPPORTStartup chain rattle leads the list, particularly on earlier PT204 builds, and should never be dismissed as character. Rising oil consumption follows close behind, often piston ring related on hard-driven examples.
As a direct-injection petrol, the engine also gathers intake valve carbon over time, dulling throttle response and idle quality.
On P400e hybrids, the petrol unit works in frequent stop-start cycles, which accelerates wear when servicing stretches. Coolant loss deserves urgent attention on any variant, since an overheated alloy Ingenium warps quickly.
The right answer depends on damage, mileage and how long you plan to keep the car. Chain wear and gasket failures favour rebuilding, because the core engine remains sound. Overheating damage or bearing failure often tips the maths toward a tested reconditioned unit instead.
