VERIFIED FEEDBACK

What Range Rover Sport Owners Say About Our Engine Work

Real reviews from Range Rover Sport owners whose engines we have rebuilt, repaired or replaced at our Grays workshop.

My SDV6 suffered the dreaded bottom-end failure at 82,000 miles with full service history. RR Engineworks rebuilt it with an uprated crank and bearings — it's now covered 30,000 trouble-free miles.

Both turbos went on my 2016 Sport within a month of each other. They replaced the pair, flushed the oil system and found the root cause. Proper engineers, not parts fitters.

Supercharged V8 developed the classic chain rattle. Full top-end rebuild with revised tensioners done in eight days. The noise is gone and it pulls harder than ever. Worth every penny.

DETAIL OVERVIEW

A Performance SUV With Well-Known Achilles Heels

Across three generations, the Range Rover Sport has been powered by everything from the 2.7 TDV6 to the 575PS supercharged V8. The 3.0-litre TDV6 and SDV6 diesels dominate the UK market, joined later by the 4.4 SDV8, Ingenium straight-six D300/D350 units and P400e plug-in hybrids.

The V6 diesels carry the Sport's most feared fault: bottom-end failure. Slender crankshaft journals and marginal oil supply mean big-end bearings can wear rapidly, and in the worst cases the crank itself snaps without warning — frequently on engines with unblemished service history. Twin-turbo failures and oil pump issues compound the risk on higher-mileage cars.

The supercharged 5.0 V8 brings its own patterns: timing chain and tensioner wear, supercharger nose-cone bearing noise, and coolant crossover leaks. Whatever the variant, our workshop has stripped, measured and rebuilt it many times over — and engineered proven solutions for every one of these documented weaknesses.

Twelve Ways We Protect Your Sport

Whether preventative or post-failure, every powertrain service below is completed in our own Grays facility by Land Rover specialists.

Engine Rebuild

Engine Rebuild

Complete strip, crank grinding or replacement, line boring and reassembly with uprated bearings — the definitive cure for V6 diesel weaknesses.

Engine Replacement

Engine Replacement

Reconditioned SDV6, TDV6 and V8 engines built to order, supplied and fitted with extended warranty options for total confidence.

Engine Diagnostics

Engine Diagnostics

Oil sampling, bearing material analysis and live data capture detect bottom-end wear early — often before any audible symptom appears.

Timing Chain Replacement

Timing Chain Replacement

V8 chains, guides and revised tensioners renewed in-situ or during rebuild, silencing rattle and protecting valve timing permanently.

Head Gasket Replacement

Head Gasket Replacement

Warped or breached heads machined flat, pressure tested and refitted with genuine gaskets across every diesel and petrol variant.

Turbo Replacement

Turbo Replacement

Single or paired turbochargers replaced with balanced units, new oil feeds and full system flushing to prevent repeat contamination.

Timing Belt Replacement

Timing Belt Replacement

Front-end ancillary drive systems renewed with genuine kits and tensioners during service or rebuild, eliminating a silent failure risk.

Engine Swap

Engine Swap

Full swap programmes for failed or upgraded units, including mounts, looms, coding and calibration to factory specification throughout.

Gearbox Replacement

Gearbox Replacement

ZF eight-speed supply, replacement and mechatronic repair, restoring seamless shifts and clearing persistent transmission fault warnings.

DPF Replacement

DPF Replacement

Blocked filters on diesel Sports cleaned or replaced with sensor renewal and software resets — a lasting, MOT-compliant solution.

Clutch Replacement

Clutch Replacement

Transfer case and driveline components serviced alongside clutch packs, curing vibration and drivetrain shunt on all-wheel-drive systems.

Major Service

Major Service

Enhanced servicing schedules with premium oils and shortened intervals — the most effective defence against bearing and chain wear.

SPORT ENGINE EXPERTS

BOTTOM-END FAILURE EXPLAINED

The 3.0 V6 diesel's crankshaft runs on comparatively narrow bearing journals fed by an oil system with little reserve capacity. As bearings wear, clearances grow, oil pressure drops and wear accelerates — a spiral that can end with a spun bearing or a snapped crankshaft, often with no warning beyond a faint knock days earlier.

Service history offers limited protection because the design margin itself is the issue. That's why our rebuilds go beyond replacement parts: we fit uprated cranks or reground journals with improved bearing materials, verify oil pump delivery, and blueprint clearances individually. The failure mode is engineered out, not just reset.

BUILT, TESTED AND GUARANTEED IN ONE ESSEX FACILITY

Sending your Sport's engine to a remanufacturing chain means anonymous work and courier delays. Here, the same engineers who strip your engine also machine, assemble and test it — and you're welcome to visit mid-build and see your crankshaft on the bench. That accountability shows in the results.

Every completed engine is run on multiple heat cycles, oil-sampled and road tested before handover. You receive the full build sheet, torque records and photographs, plus warranty terms that reflect our confidence. For owners further afield, we arrange vehicle collection and nationwide delivery of supply-and-fit reconditioned units.

COMMON ENGINE QUESTIONS

Straight Answers, No Jargon

The headline faults are bottom-end and crankshaft failure on 3.0 V6 diesels, twin-turbo failures, timing chain wear on the supercharged V8, and DPF-related oil dilution on later Ingenium engines.
