Your Defender is down on power, the oil warning light is flickering, or a garage has just told you the engine needs work. Now you're asking the real questions: is it worth fixing, what will it cost, and who can you trust with it?
The Land Rover TD5 engine is one of the most respected diesels the brand has built. It is also one of the most misunderstood. Most TD5 failures are predictable and preventable when you know what to look for. Many engines written off by owners can be rebuilt to run for years.
This guide explains what the TD5 is, where it goes wrong, and how to choose between a used, reconditioned or rebuilt replacement. It comes from the workshop at RR Engine Works in Grays, Essex, where we see these engines strip down every week.
What Is the Land Rover TD5 Engine and Which Models Use It?

The TD5 is a 2.5-litre, five-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled diesel with electronic unit injection. Land Rover developed it under the internal name Project Storm during the late 1990s, when the Rover Group was under BMW ownership. It replaced the mechanically injected 300Tdi and brought electronic engine management to the Defender and Discovery for the first time.
It was the last diesel engine Land Rover designed in-house. It went into every diesel Discovery Series II and Defender built between 1998 and 2006.
What Are the TD5 Engine Specifications?
The TD5 is a compact, robust design with a cast iron block and an aluminium cylinder head. Here are the core figures:
- Capacity: 2,495cc (often listed as 2.5 litres or 2498cc)
- Layout: inline five-cylinder, five-cylinder turbo diesel
- Injection: electronic unit injectors, controlled by the ECU
- Compression ratio: 19.5:1
- Firing order: 1-2-4-5-3
- Turbocharger: Garrett GT2052S, with intercooler
- Throttle: electronic (drive-by-wire)
Each of these matters when you buy parts or a replacement engine. The electronic management, for example, is why the TD5 smooths out power delivery so well. It is also why wiring faults and sensor issues need a specialist's eye rather than guesswork.
How Much Power and Torque Does a TD5 Produce?
Output depends on the model and year. Defender versions typically produce around 122 bhp, while Discovery 2 versions reach around 136 bhp. Torque sits between roughly 300 Nm and 315 Nm (about 221 lb ft at the upper end).
On paper the figures look modest. On the road and off it, that low-down torque is what makes the TD5 so good at towing and rough ground. Because it is ECU-controlled, it also responds well to a proper remap. Stage 1 tuning can add useful pulling power, but only on an engine that is mechanically healthy.
TD5 vs 300Tdi: what changed? The 300Tdi is simpler, fully mechanical and easy to fix with basic tools. The TD5 is smoother, quieter, more refined and more powerful, but it relies on electronics and diagnostic equipment. Neither is better in every situation. The TD5 just needs more specialist knowledge to keep in good order.
Which Land Rover Models Have a TD5 Engine?
Two platforms use the TD5, and both are still hugely popular.
Defender 90, 110 and 130 TD5
The TD5 arrived in the Defender in 1998 and stayed until 2006, when the Ford Puma took over. You'll find it in the Defender 90, Defender 110 and Defender 130, in station wagon, pickup and van bodies. Owners often describe it as the sweet spot of the Defender range: modern enough to cruise happily, classic enough to hold its value.
Discovery 2 TD5
The Discovery 2 TD5 (also called the Discovery Series II or Land Rover Discovery II) used the same engine family from 1998. Discovery versions are usually tuned for slightly more power and paired with different ancillaries, which is why an engine from one vehicle can't always be dropped straight into the other. We cover that in the compatibility section below.
What Is the Difference Between the 10P, 15P and 16P TD5?
The engine code stamped on the block (10P, 15P or 16P) tells you which version of the TD5 you have. Getting this right matters, because parts and engine control components are not always interchangeable between codes.
Feature | 10P | 15P | 16P |
| Generation | Early TD5 | Mid-production update | Later production |
| ECU and loom | Earlier specification | Revised specification | Revised specification |
| Emissions and EGR | Earlier arrangement | Updated arrangement | Updated arrangement |
| Swap consideration | Match ECU and loom | Match ECU and loom | Match ECU and loom |
Land Rover revised the cylinder head, injectors, wiring and emissions equipment across production. Because these changes affect how the engine talks to the ECU, a mismatched swap can bring warning lights or poor running.
Our advice: always check the engine number before you order. Send us your registration and the code from the block, and we will confirm exactly what your vehicle needs.
What Are the Most Common Land Rover TD5 Engine Problems?

Is the TD5 reliable? Yes, and many examples pass 200,000 miles. But it has a small number of well-known weak points. Owners who understand them avoid most of the big bills. Owners who ignore them sometimes end up buying a replacement engine.
Here is what we see most often, roughly in the order of how much damage each one causes.
Why Is There Oil in My TD5 Injector Loom and ECU?
This is the fault we see most often in workshops. Engine oil creeps along the copper wiring inside the injector harness, through the rocker cover, and works its way up the loom towards the ECU.
What it looks like:
- Hesitation, misfires or rough running
- Loss of power and limp mode
- Hard starting, or a no-start
- Fault codes that seem to jump around
The oil-soaked insulation swells and causes intermittent electrical faults. In severe cases the oil reaches the ECU connector and damages the ECU itself.
A real-world example: a customer arrives with a Defender 110 that runs fine when cold but stutters once warm. The garage has already replaced the injectors, without success. When we pull the rocker cover and inspect the loom, the harness is saturated. A new injector loom fixes the fault for a fraction of the cost of new injectors.
Catching this early is worth a lot. A new loom costs far less than a replacement ECU.
What Happens When a TD5 Oil Pump Bolt Fails?
This is the fault that catches owners out. The oil pump is driven from the front of the crankshaft, and the fixings holding the pump can work loose over time. If they back out, the pump loses drive and oil pressure drops sharply.
An engine that runs without oil pressure for even a short time can suffer serious bearing and crankshaft damage. This is one of the most common reasons a TD5 ends up needing a full rebuild.
Can the Damage Be Prevented?
In most cases, yes. A preventative inspection of the oil pump fixings, using an upgraded fitting, secured correctly, takes little time compared with the cost of an engine. If you have bought a TD5 recently and have no record of this being checked, it is worth doing.
Warning signs include a low oil pressure light, unusual noises from the front of the engine, or falling oil pressure at idle. Stop the engine and get it inspected before it goes any further.
What Causes TD5 Head Gasket Failure and Cylinder Head Cracking?
Head gasket problems and cylinder head cracks usually come from overheating. Blocked radiators, failing fans, worn water pumps and low coolant levels all start the chain reaction. The aluminium head is more sensitive to heat than the cast iron block, so it is the part that suffers first.
Typical symptoms:
- Coolant loss with no visible leak
- White smoke from the exhaust
- Bubbling in the expansion tank
- Pressurised cooling system
- Milky deposits under the oil filler cap
Why Does My TD5 Overheat or Lose Coolant?
Start with the basics: radiator condition, thermostat, water pump and fan operation. If those check out, a pressure test on the cooling system will show whether combustion gases are entering the coolant. That points to the head gasket or a cracked head.
A cylinder head that has overheated needs to be pressure tested, checked for flatness and skimmed if required. Fitting a new head gasket to a warped or cracked head is the classic false economy.
How Do You Diagnose Loss of Power, Misfires or Hard Starting on a TD5?
Diagnosis is where a TD5 specialist earns their money. Symptoms overlap, and the cheap guess is often wrong.
Work through the likely causes in order:
- Fault codes: a proper diagnostic tool such as a Nanocom reads codes the standard reader misses.
- Injector loom: oil contamination causes many "mystery" faults.
- Fuel pressure: a failing fuel pressure regulator causes hard starting and power loss.
- Air supply: check the MAF sensor, intercooler hoses and boost leaks.
- Exhaust and EGR: blocked or sticking EGR components can choke performance.
Turbo, Fuel Pressure Regulator and MAF Faults
- Turbo: low boost, whistling or blue smoke points to a worn turbocharger or wastegate issue.
- Fuel pressure regulator: a common cause of hard starting and rough running, and often overlooked.
- MAF sensor: a tired sensor causes weak acceleration and black smoke.
If you have a symptom not listed here, contact us with your registration and we will point you in the right direction. If a diagnosis leaves you unsure, a second opinion from an engine specialist is cheap insurance.
Should You Rebuild, Recondition or Replace Your Land Rover TD5 Engine?
If the engine has suffered serious internal damage, you face a decision. Fixing it, replacing it, or walking away. Most owners don't want to walk away. A well-built TD5 can go on for years and keeps a Defender or Discovery worth far more than a tired one.
Can a TD5 Engine Be Rebuilt, and What Does the Process Involve?
Yes. The TD5 is a very rebuildable engine, and that is often the best value route when the block and crankshaft are sound.
Strip-Down, Measurement, Machining, Pressure Testing and Assembly
A proper rebuild follows a strict process:
- Strip-down and cleaning: every component is removed, cleaned and inspected.
- Crack testing: the block and head are checked for hidden cracks.
- Measurement: cylinder bores, crankshaft journals and clearances are measured against specification.
- Machining: the block and head are machined where needed, including skimming the head.
- Pressure testing: the cylinder head is pressure tested.
- Component replacement: bearings, piston rings, seals, gaskets and timing components are renewed. The oil pump is checked and refitted with the correct fixings.
- Injectors and turbo: injectors are tested, and the turbocharger is inspected.
- Assembly and testing: the engine is assembled to specification and checked before it leaves us.
The measuring stage is what separates a proper rebuild from a quick refresh. Skipping it is how engines fail again within months.
What Is the Difference Between Used, Reconditioned and Rebuilt TD5 Engines?
The words get used loosely, and it causes confusion. Here is how we describe each option:
Engine type | What it is | Best suited to |
| Used | Second-hand engine taken from a donor vehicle, minimal work | Tight budgets and short-term fixes |
| Reconditioned | Existing engine inspected, with worn components replaced | Daily drivers and working vehicles |
| Rebuilt | Full strip, measurement and machining, with new internals | Long-term ownership and restoration |
| Remanufactured | Rebuilt to a defined specification | Replacement where consistency matters |
The key point about a used engine is that its history is often unknown. You are taking on the previous owner's maintenance and any faults still hidden inside it.
Which Option Suits a Daily Driver and Which Suits a Long-Term Project?
If you use your Defender daily and plan to keep it, a rebuilt or reconditioned TD5 is usually the sensible choice. If you are selling soon and only need it running, a good used engine may do. For a restoration or a vehicle you'll hold for years, a full rebuild is the most reliable investment.
Can a Discovery 2 TD5 Engine Fit a Defender?
Yes, and it is a common swap. Both vehicles use the TD5 engine family, and the engine mountings and bellhousing generally suit a Defender gearbox. Many owners use a Discovery donor engine to replace a worn Defender unit.
But it is not a straight bolt-in. Check these before you commit:
- ECU and engine loom: they must match the engine and be compatible with the vehicle.
- Injectors and EGR: these differ between versions and codes.
- Cooling system and intercooler: pipe routing and fittings may differ.
- Ancillaries and exhaust: some brackets and connections need changing.
- Transmission: manual and automatic vehicles have different requirements.
The safest route is to fit the engine together with its matching ECU and loom, and confirm the engine code first. We can advise on any specific swap if you send us the details.
How Much Does a TD5 Engine Replacement or Rebuild Cost?
There is no single price, because it depends on the engine's condition, the code, whether you need supply-only or a fitted engine, and what else is worn.
Supply-Only Versus Fitted Pricing, and What Warranty to Expect
- Supply-only: you get the engine and arrange fitting yourself.
- Supply and fit: we source or build the engine and fit it, including labour.
- Rebuild of your own engine: costs depend on how much needs machining or replacing.
Always ask what warranty comes with the engine and what it covers. A properly rebuilt engine should come with clear written terms. Be wary of any supplier who can't explain their warranty or the work that was done.

TD5 Engine FAQs
How Long Does a TD5 Engine Last, and How Many Miles Can It Do?
A well-maintained TD5 can pass 200,000 miles and beyond. Regular oil changes, a healthy cooling system, and early attention to the injector loom and oil pump fixings make the biggest difference.
Is It Better to Rebuild or Replace a TD5 Engine?
If the block and crankshaft are sound, a rebuild is often better value and gives you an engine built to a known standard. Replacement suits engines with severe damage, or owners who want the job done quickly. We will assess your engine and tell you which route makes sense.
What Does TD5 Stand For?
TD5 refers to a five-cylinder turbo diesel. It is Land Rover's designation for the 2.5-litre engine introduced in 1998.
Which Land Rovers Use the TD5 Engine?
The Defender 90, 110 and 130, and the Discovery 2 (Discovery Series II), built between 1998 and 2006.
What Causes a TD5 to Lose Power?
Common causes include an oil-contaminated injector loom, a failing fuel pressure regulator, a dirty MAF sensor, boost leaks or turbo wear. A proper diagnostic scan is the right first step.
Can I Swap a 10P for a 15P or 16P?
Sometimes, but you must match the ECU, loom and related components. Speak to a specialist before buying.
Final Word: Protect the Engine, Protect the Vehicle
The Land Rover TD5 engine has earned its reputation. It is capable, tough and enjoyable to drive, but it rewards owners who understand its weak points. Catch the oil in the loom early. Have the oil pump fixings checked. Keep the cooling system healthy. Do those three things and most TD5s will keep going for years.
If yours has already gone wrong, you don't have to guess your way to a fix. Whether you need a diagnosis, a rebuild, a reconditioned engine or a full supply-and-fit replacement, we'll give you straight answers and a clear price.
