Head gasket failure, tired Td5 or worn V8 — our Essex workshop restores Discovery 2 engines to full health with genuine parts and a written warranty.

VERIFIED FEEDBACK
What Land Rover Discovery 2 Owners Say About Our Engine Work
Real reviews from Land Rover Discovery 2 owners whose engines we have rebuilt, repaired or replaced at our Grays workshop.
“Mayonnaise under the oil cap and coolant loss — classic head gasket signs. They confirmed it, skimmed the head, rebuilt the top end and my Td5 runs sweeter than it has in years.”
Richard B.
Discovery 2 Td5
“My V8 was overheating and losing coolant with no visible leak. They found the slipped liner, rebuilt the engine with proper liners fitted, and it's been faultless through two summers since.”
Karen L.
Discovery 2 V8
“Sent my tired Td5 to them as a bare engine from Yorkshire. Came back rebuilt, tested and crated with photos of the whole process. Fantastic communication throughout, genuinely knowledgeable people.”

DETAIL OVERVIEW
The Last Old-School Land Rover
The Discovery 2 marked a turning point: the electronically injected Td5 diesel paired with rugged, body-on-frame engineering. These vehicles now sit firmly in modern-classic territory, and owners keep them because nothing since drives quite the same. Our Grays workshop specialises in keeping Td5 and 4.0 V8 engines healthy for the long haul.
Head gasket failure is the Discovery 2's most notorious weakness, on both engines. On the Td5 it often stems from head porosity or a dropped liner seal; on the V8, from the block's slipped-liner tendency. We diagnose the true cause with pressure and combustion-gas testing before quoting, because fitting a gasket over an unresolved fault wastes your money.
When rebuild time comes, we do it once and do it thoroughly. Heads are crack-tested and skimmed, injector seals renewed, oil pump bolts secured — the known Td5 failure point — and every engine is run and leak-checked before handover. That's why enthusiast owners across the UK trust us with their Discovery 2.

DISCOVERY 2 EXPERTSWHY THE TD5 REWARDS A PROPER REBUILD
The five-cylinder Td5 was Land Rover's first electronically managed diesel, and it remains one of their best. Strong, characterful and hugely tuneable, it will exceed 300,000 miles when its known weaknesses are addressed. Our rebuilds correct all of them: head condition, injector seals, wiring harness oil migration and the infamous oil pump bolt.
We rebuild Td5 engines for customers nationwide, many arriving as bare engines by courier. Each one is stripped to the last bolt, cleaned, measured and photographed, then rebuilt with genuine pistons, bearings and gaskets. You receive a documented, run-tested engine with warranty — effectively a new Td5 at a fraction of the cost.
CURING THE DISCOVERY 2 HEAD GASKET PROBLEM FOR GOOD
Ask any owners' forum about the Discovery 2 and head gaskets dominate the conversation. White exhaust smoke, unexplained coolant loss, oil emulsification and pressurised header tanks are the classic warning signs. Ignore them and a repairable fault becomes a warped head, a cracked block, or complete engine failure within a few hundred miles.
Our approach is diagnostic first: combustion gas testing confirms the failure, then the head comes off for crack detection and precision skimming. On V8s we check liner position before reassembly, because a gasket alone won't fix a shifted liner. The result is a repair that lasts, not one that returns next winter.
