Velar Rattling? We Fix the Fault Behind the Codes
P0016, P0017 and cold-start rattle all point the same way: timing chain wear. Our Grays specialists diagnose, repair and rebuild Velar engines before minor noise becomes major expense.

VERIFIED FEEDBACK
What Range Rover Velar Owners Say About Our Engine Work
Real reviews from Range Rover Velar owners whose engines we have rebuilt, repaired or replaced at our Grays workshop.
“P0017 flashed up on the M25 and the dealer suggested a new engine. RR Engineworks replaced the chain and tensioners for a quarter of that quote. Eight months on, absolutely perfect.”

“I'd been driving with a cold-start rattle for weeks, not realising the danger. Their diagnosis showed chain stretch just in time. Honest advice, fast turnaround, and a car that sounds new again.”
Emma J.
Velar P250
“Chain jumped on my D180 and bent the valves. Full rebuild completed in under two weeks with photos at every stage. The quality of workmanship genuinely exceeded main dealer standards.”

DETAIL OVERVIEW
Why Velar Engines Rattle, Stretch and Fail
The Velar range is built almost entirely on Ingenium power: 2.0-litre D180, D200 and twin-turbo D240 diesels, P250 and P300 petrols, and later 3.0-litre straight-six D300 and P400 mild hybrids. Early cars also offered a supercharged V6, with the rare SVAutobiography carrying the 5.0 V8.
Across the four-cylinder Ingenium family, the recurring weakness is the timing chain. Oil diluted by interrupted DPF regeneration, or degraded by extended service intervals, accelerates wear in the chain, guides and hydraulic tensioner. The first symptom is a metallic rattle for a few seconds on cold start — easy to dismiss, and dangerous to ignore.
As stretch worsens, camshaft and crankshaft timing drift out of correlation, triggering fault codes P0016 and P0017 and forcing the engine into restricted running. This is the final warning before the chain jumps teeth or snaps, driving pistons into valves. Understanding this sequence is precisely how we save Velar owners thousands.

VELAR ENGINE EXPERTSCAN YOU KEEP DRIVING A VELAR WITH CHAIN RATTLE OR P0016/P0017?CAN YOU KEEP DRIVING A VELAR WITH CHAIN RATTLE?
Honestly? Technically the car may still run, but every cold start gambles with a five-figure outcome. Codes P0016 and P0017 mean the crankshaft and camshaft positions no longer agree — the chain has stretched far enough that the engine's own management considers timing unreliable. There is no margin left.
Our straightforward advice: stop driving, especially avoiding cold starts, and have the car recovered for assessment. At stage three, a chain kit saves the engine. One more commute could jump the chain and multiply the bill several times over. We offer rapid recovery across Essex precisely because hours matter here.
WHAT HONEST DIAGNOSIS LOOKS LIKE
Plenty of Velar owners arrive quoted for full engines they don't need. Our process protects you from that: electronic stretch measurement reads actual chain elongation, borescope inspection checks for valve contact, and oil analysis reveals dilution levels. You see the evidence yourself before we recommend anything.
Only then do we quote — fixed, written and itemised, whether that's a preventative chain kit, a top-end repair or a complete rebuild. If your engine genuinely is beyond saving, we'll show you why and price a reconditioned unit transparently. That honesty is why dealer-refused Velars end up leaving our workshop running perfectly.
