Understanding the Discovery Sport's Engine Line-Up
Launched in 2015, the Discovery Sport initially carried over the 2.2-litre SD4 diesel before Land Rover's own 2.0-litre Ingenium unit took over. The TD4 150 and SD4 180 diesels became the volume sellers across the UK, joined by Si4 petrol variants and, from the 2019 facelift, mild-hybrid D150, D165, D180 and D200 derivatives.
The Ingenium family is compact, refined and efficient, but the earliest 204DTD diesels developed a reputation for timing chain stretch and premature turbocharger wear. The later 204DTA mild-hybrid engines improved matters considerably, though both generations remain vulnerable to oil dilution when diesel particulate filter regeneration cycles are repeatedly cut short.
This is why generic engine work rarely delivers lasting results on a Discovery Sport. Our workshop rebuilds these specific engines week in, week out. DISCOVERY SPORT EXPERTSHOW DPF REGENERATION QUIETLY DESTROYS DISCOVERY SPORT DIESEL ENGINES
Every diesel Discovery Sport relies on its particulate filter burning off trapped soot at high temperature. To trigger this, the engine injects extra fuel late in the combustion cycle. When journeys are too short for the process to finish, that unburnt diesel slips past the piston rings and steadily contaminates the engine oil.
Diluted oil loses viscosity and pressure. The turbocharger's bearings — spinning at over 150,000rpm — are usually first to suffer, followed by the timing chain and crank bearings. Heat builds, wear accelerates, and a minor DPF inconvenience becomes a full engine failure. Recognising this chain of events early is what saves our customers thousands.
WHAT SETS AN RR ENGINEWORKS REBUILD APART
We begin with evidence, not assumptions: oil analysis, borescope imaging and live diagnostic data confirm exactly what has failed and why. You then receive a fixed, itemised quotation. Nothing proceeds without your approval, and you're welcome to see your stripped engine and inspect the worn components yourself.
During reassembly we fit updated tensioners, revised chains and genuine gaskets, then address the root cause — whether that's a blocked DPF, a failing injector or a software issue. Every completed engine is refitted, coded and road tested over multiple heat cycles before handover, with documentation and warranty included as standard.
