VERIFIED FEEDBACK

What Land Rover Discovery 4 Owners Say About Our Engine Work

Real reviews from Land Rover Discovery 4 owners whose engines we have rebuilt, repaired or replaced at our Grays workshop.

A metallic rattle on cold start turned out to be a badly stretched timing chain. They caught it before the crank suffered, rebuilt the top end with the updated chain kit, and the engine is silent now.

Discovery 4 SDV6

Total crankshaft failure at 120k. Rather than a risky used engine, they built me a fully reconditioned SDV6 with documented crank testing. Eighteen months on, it's the best money I've spent on the car.

F

Fiona A.

Discovery 4 HSE

My LR4 lost power and smoked under load — turbo failure feeding debris into the intake. They replaced the turbos, flushed everything, and rebuilt the engine properly. Honest, methodical, and superb value.

DETAIL OVERVIEW

Inside The 3.0 SDV6 Diesel

The Discovery 4's 3.0-litre SDV6 answered nearly every criticism of the earlier 2.7 — more torque, better refinement and a far stronger oil pump. Yet it introduced weaknesses of its own, and the most serious is timing chain wear. The rear-mounted chain stretches with age, and because it sits against the bulkhead, replacement is engine-out work.

A stretched chain announces itself quietly: a rattle for a few seconds on cold start, a slightly rougher idle, perhaps a correlation fault stored in the ECU. Left alone, it can jump teeth or snap, wrecking valves and pistons in an instant. The SDV6 also suffers turbo bearing wear, injector faults and — on unlucky examples — sudden crankshaft failure.

We rebuild these engines with all of that history in mind. Every SDV6 rebuild includes the latest-specification chain kit, crack and hardness testing of the crankshaft, measured bearing clearances and inspected turbochargers. It's the difference between an engine that merely runs and one you can trust for the next hundred thousand miles.

Timing Chain Replacement

Timing Chain Replacement

The Discovery 4's defining repair — engine-out replacement of chains, guides and tensioners using the latest revised parts, done routinely here.

Head Gasket Replacement

Head Gasket Replacement

Overheated SDV6 engines recovered with pressure-tested, skimmed heads and new gaskets, plus the cooling fault that started it corrected.

Turbo Replacement

Turbo Replacement

Parallel turbochargers renewed with flushed oil feeds and cleaned intercooler pipework, so debris from failed units never circulates again.

Timing Belt Replacement

Timing Belt Replacement

Owners of early 2.7-engined Discovery 4s receive the same rear cam belt and fuel pump belt service we perfected on hundreds of TDV6s.

DISCOVERY 3 OR DISCOVERY 4? THE ENGINES ARE NOT THE SAME

Many owners and even some garages treat the two L319 generations as identical. They aren't. The Discovery 3's 2.7 TDV6 fails through its oil pump and starved crank bearings, while the Discovery 4's 3.0 SDV6 fails through timing chain stretch, turbo wear and occasional crankshaft breakage. Diagnosing one like the other wastes time and money.

That distinction shapes everything we do. A 2.7 rebuild prioritises the uprated oil pump; a 3.0 rebuild prioritises the revised chain kit and crank verification. Because our workshop handles both platforms daily, your Discovery gets the correct preventative work for its actual engine — not a generic checklist borrowed from the wrong generation.

RECONDITIONED SDV6 ENGINES READY WHEN YOURS ISN'T

Timing chain and crankshaft failures rarely give notice, and a stranded Discovery 4 disrupts family life and work alike. Our rolling stock of reconditioned 3.0 SDV6 engines exists for exactly that moment — each unit rebuilt with the updated chain kit, tested crank and refurbished ancillaries before it ever reaches the shelf.

Local owners across Essex, London and the Home Counties choose supply-and-fit at our Grays workshop, typically back on the road within days rather than weeks. Trade customers and distant owners order crated engines with build sheets, torque records and warranty certificates included. Either way, you know exactly what's going into your vehicle.

COMMON ENGINE QUESTIONS

Straight Answers, No Jargon

Most Discovery 4s use the 3.0-litre TDV6 or SDV6 twin-turbo diesel (306DT). Early base models kept the 2.7 TDV6, and some export LR4 models received the 5.0 V8 petrol.
