The current Range Rover (L460) arrived in 2022, so long-term data on engine wear doesn't exist yet. What does exist is a growing list of recalls, most involving oil leaks or electrical faults that can affect the engine and drive.
Most L460s are still under warranty, or have only recently come out of it. For owners and used buyers, the most useful things to know are:
- which campaigns apply to which cars;
- which symptoms matter;
- how to confirm that the recall work has been done.
What Is Known About L460 Engines So Far

Engines in the L460 Range
Engine | Type | Notes |
| D250 / D300 / D350 | 3.0 Ingenium straight-six diesel, mild hybrid | The most common UK choice |
| P400 | 3.0 Ingenium straight-six petrol, mild hybrid | |
| P440e / P510e / P550e | 3.0 straight-six petrol plug-in hybrid | Large high-voltage battery |
| P530 | 4.4 BMW twin-turbo V8 (N63) | Early cars |
| P615 | 4.4 BMW twin-turbo V8 (S68) | From the 2024 model year |

PistonHeads reported finding no evidence of inherent drivetrain faults on the later P615. Some owners have, however, mistaken the engine's power restriction during the run-in period for a fault.
L460 Engine and Powertrain Issues: A Timeline

These are recalls filed with the US safety regulator (NHTSA). Most JLR campaigns are global, but whether a UK car is affected must be confirmed by VIN.
Filed | Campaign | Applies to (as filed) | Issue |
| Feb 2023 | N763 (NHTSA 23V044) | 2020–2023 Range Rover, among other models | Cam carrier oil channel may be blocked, causing an oil leak and fire risk |
| 2023 | N780 | One 2023 Range Rover (V8) | Missing turbo oil-drain gasket |
| 2023 | 23V568 | 2023 Range Rover and Sport PHEV | High-voltage battery busbar bolt; risk of arcing and fire |
| 2024 | N908 (NHTSA 24V450) | 2024–2025 3.0 Ingenium engines | Oil filter housing may crack and leak oil |
| Apr 2026 | D126 / H575 (NHTSA 26V248) | 2020–2024 Range Rover, among other mild-hybrid models | DC-DC converter fault; loss of 12V charging, drive power and lights |
Oil-Leak and Fire-Risk Recalls
Cam carrier (N763)
- Which cars: the filing covers 2020–2023 Range Rovers, among other models. A 2020–2021 Range Rover would be the previous L405, so check by VIN whether your L460 is included.
- Fault: a blocked oil channel in the cam carrier can cause an oil leak.
- Remedy: dealers inspect the cam carrier and replace it and related parts if needed (VehicleSafetyRecalls).
Oil filter housing (N908)
- Which cars: 2024–2025 model-year 3.0 Ingenium engines.
- Fault: the housing may have been made from the wrong plastic and can crack.
- Remedy: a free replacement housing and filter (NHTSA).
Turbo drain gasket (N780)
- Which cars: a single early V8 car in the US filing.
- Fault: a missing gasket could let oil reach the exhaust manifold.
Hybrid and Electrical Faults That Affect Drive
PHEV high-voltage battery (23V568)
- Which cars: some 2023 plug-in hybrids.
- Fault: a battery busbar bolt may lack clamping force, which risks arcing and, rarely, fire.
- Warning sign: a "Battery fault detected" message.
- Remedy: a replacement battery pack (NHTSA).
DC-DC converter (D126 / H575)
- What the part does: on mild-hybrid models, the DC-DC converter links the 48V system to the 12V system.
- Fault: NHTSA filing 26V248, announced in April 2026, says an internal fault can stop the 12V battery charging. That can cause loss of drive power and exterior lighting.
- Remedy: at the time of filing, the remedy was still being developed (NHTSA).
- Why it matters: this fault can look like an engine failure, but its cause is electrical.
Checks for Owners and Used Buyers

- Run a recall check by registration or VIN on the GOV.UK recall checker, and ask a Land Rover retailer for a printout of completed campaigns.
- Confirm the warranty status. Most L460s are still covered by the manufacturer's warranty or an approved extension.
- Check the service history. V8 models have shorter service intervals than the six-cylinders.
- Look for oil leaks around the top of the engine and the oil filter area, and for any burning smell after a drive.
- On PHEVs, check charging, the battery status and any hybrid warning history.
- Get a specialist health check before buying. It should include fault codes, live data, and the 12V and 48V system status.
Once the warranty has ended, RR Engine Works' engine diagnostics can investigate warning lights, leaks and power loss. Engine coverage for related platforms is listed on the Range Rover 4.4 and Range Rover 3.0 pages.
Warning Signs and When to Stop
Stop and call for assistance if you see any of these:
- an oil-pressure warning;
- smoke, or a strong burning-oil smell;
- overheating;
- loss of drive power;
- a high-voltage battery warning with smoke. In that case, get out of the car and call the emergency services.
Book a check soon if you notice:
- oil drips;
- a 12V or 48V battery warning;
- an amber engine light;
- a DPF warning on the diesel;
- poor charging on a PHEV.
Frequently Asked Questions
Range Rover L460 Engine Problems FAQs
What are the main L460 engine problems?
So far, mainly recalls. These cover oil leaks (the cam carrier, oil filter housing and an early turbo drain gasket), a PHEV battery connection fault, and a DC-DC converter fault that can cause loss of drive power.
Is the L460 Range Rover reliable?
It's too new for long-term failure data. Its documented issues are mostly recall items with free fixes, so check that the recall work has been completed.
What is the L460 loss of drive power recall?
A 2026 recall covers DC-DC converters on many JLR mild-hybrid models. A fault can stop the 12V battery charging and cause loss of drive power. Check by VIN whether your car is included.
Are BMW V8 L460s more problematic?
There's no published evidence of inherent faults in the later S68 V8 in the P615. Keep to the shorter V8 service intervals and confirm any recalls are complete.
Should I buy a used L460 out of warranty?
Only with completed recalls, a full service history and a specialist pre-purchase check. An approved extended warranty is also worth considering.
If your L460 has a warning light, leak or power-loss fault outside warranty, contact RR Engine Works on 01708 592377 through the contact page.
